Sunshine! This is what it was all about at the 5K Marina Rebound Run

Race Results

After a rainy sequence of nearly a week, the sun conquered the skies in Beirut and Dbayeh on January 9th, 2011 for the pure pleasure of the runners who lined up at this 2nd edition of the 5K Marina Rebound Run.

The atmosphere was dazzling, smiles were visible on all faces, and quite good performances were achieved by many.

Hussein Hajj Hassan of the Lebanese Army made 1st overall clocking 16m03s, slightly ahead of Daoud Mustapha (2nd) from the Veterans Club and Army runner Malek Nasr (3rd).

On the women’s side, Melissa Rizk, who was recently crowned Lebanese champion over the half-marathon distance, confirmed her good form by crossing the finish line in a sub 20m time (19m58s). Melissa headed an Inter-Lebanon women’s team who took the first 5 places: Aseel Basma (2nd), Mirvat Hamzeh (3rd), Alma Khadra (4th) and Diala el Chab (5th).

We were thrilled by the performance of 11 year old Lea Salibi! Lea was running her first ever 5K. Obviously the girl has a brilliant future in mid distance running. Let’s wait and see if she catches the running bug. No pressure, Lea! Gabriel Salibi, Mohamad Hannouf, Habib Hatem, Hussein Khalife and many other youngsters were there as well.

Dr. Nouhad Genadry, son of the late Brigadier General Francois Genadry who was an iconic figure in Lebanese running, joined the race and made it to the podium in second place in his age category.

By 9:30 am the medal ceremony per gender and age bracket was over, and all runners returned home, but not before singing happy birthday to Adel Arakji and giving a standing ovation to Nizar Daouk and Nasrallah Atwi (both > 80 years of age).

The next Inter-Lebanon race, the ISF Wissam Eid half-marathon is scheduled for February 27th, 2011. Online registration will open on January 17th, 2011.

the runners who chickened out

the runners who chickened out because of the weather, were once again proven wrong. Right at the start, we had the most beautiful rainbow and we finished in bright sunlight. Great race, with the usual funny note of the chairman ("start in 5 minutes ... no wait, come back, we're late") and love recycling initiative at the finish line. Yalla, next time we get serious with the half marathon classic, Hamra-Marina.

3 regrets

1/ 40% of registered runners did not show up at the start. they must have probably chickened out because of the bad weather

2/Phenicia Tyre runners cancelled their registration 48h prior to race day. reasons still unknown. hope to see them at the next race

3/ the printer of the t shirts insisted on reminding us that we are in Lebanon and that things cannot be perfect: he simply planted in the very good quality t shirt a typo : 91t January instead of 9th january.

Had you not pointed out the

Had you not pointed out the typo on the T-shirt, I'm sure half the participants would not have noticed :) One word describes the race: Superb.
